Manhattanville

Manhattanville lies in a valley between Morningside Heights and Hamilton Heights, where the 125th Street corridor meets the Hudson River.

The valley and the viaduct

The southern edge of Manhattanville rises on a steep slope toward Morningside Heights. Road and rail viaducts carry traffic over the valley, and the elevated IRT Broadway Line Viaduct and the Riverside Drive viaducts are among the neighborhood's principal landmarks.

The 125th Street station on the 1 train, at Broadway and 125th Street, is one of its main subway stations. A walk here shows the older industrial buildings of the valley next to new construction.

Columbia's Manhattanville campus

Columbia University's expansion occupies several blocks between roughly 125th and 133rd Streets east of Broadway, designed largely by Renzo Piano Workshop. It includes the Forum, the Lenfest Center for the Arts with the Wallach Art Gallery and the Jerome L. Greene Science Center. The Henry R. Kravis Building houses Columbia Business School, and the Studebaker Building on 131st Street is used by Columbia too.

Waterfront and parks

West Harlem Piers park runs from 125th to 132nd Street along the Hudson River, with a fishing pier and sculptures, and it is part of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway. Riverside Park lies to the south, north of Grant's Tomb.

Other places to know

The 125th Street corridor is an arts and cultural corridor. The landmarked Claremont Theatre, St. Mary's Protestant Episcopal Church and the Old Broadway Synagogue are among the older buildings, while the Factory District redevelops former industrial buildings. The Manhattanville Houses are a large New York City Housing Authority complex, and the 26th Precinct is at 520 West 126th Street.
