01Start with the theme
Pick the story you want. History walks follow the landmark districts and the Harlem Renaissance. Gospel and jazz tours center on music. Food tours follow soul food and the cooking of other communities, and bus and bike tours trade depth for distance.
Some operators cover several themes, and some cover only one. The directory lists tour types for each operator, so you can filter before you call.
02Decide on length and pace
Tours range from a short walk to a half day. A food walking tour from Harlem Heritage runs about three hours, and the Harlem Renaissance bus tour from Inside Out Tours is listed at four to five hours. Be honest about your stamina and your schedule, and leave room before and after for travel.
Ask about walking distance, stairs and breaks. A tour with fewer stops moves more slowly, and a bus tour spares your feet.
03Check the meeting point and transit
Know exactly where the tour starts and how you will get there. Central Harlem is served by the 2 and 3 at 125th Street and Lenox Avenue, by the A and D at 125th Street and Saint Nicholas Avenue (the C stops except at night and the B on weekday days), and by the 4, 5 and 6 at 125th Street on Lexington Avenue. Metro-North's Harlem-125th Street station is at 101 East 125th Street.
The operators in the directory are spread across Harlem and beyond. Some are on Malcolm X Boulevard, one is on Fifth Avenue, and some are in other boroughs and bring the tour to Harlem, so the office address is not always the meeting point. Ask.
04Ask about group size and privacy
Small groups hear the guide better and ask more questions. Private tours let you set the route, and operators such as Custom & Private New York Tours, Inc. and Inside Out Tours offer private options. Taste Harlem, for one, works with independent travelers, groups, corporate outings and youth groups.
05Questions to ask before you pay
- What is the exact start point and end point?
- How long does the tour run, and does it run in rain?
- Is the tour on foot, by coach or by bike?
- What is included: tastings, admissions, transport?
- What is the cancellation and rescheduling policy?
- Can the guide accommodate mobility needs or dietary needs?
Prices and schedules change, so confirm them directly with the operator the week you plan to go. Call the number on the operator's profile.
?Common questions
How far in advance should I book?
Ask the operator. Small private tours often need more notice than a scheduled group tour.
What if the weather is bad?
Ask whether the tour runs in rain, snow or heat, and what the rescheduling policy is.
Can I bring children?
Ask each operator about age suitability, length and group rules before you book.
Are all operators based in Harlem?
No. Several are in Harlem, but others are based elsewhere in Manhattan or in Brooklyn and offer Harlem tours.
Which operators offer private tours?
Custom & Private New York Tours, Inside Out Tours and Hush Hip Hop Tours offer private options.
